YellowMan Expensive?

It’s a question we get a lot. Why are YellowMan garments so expensive?

One editorial at inkedtalk.com said, “…for the demographic he [Peter Mui] is targeting, most of us would spend $218 on a tattoo, not a shirt.” (full text…)

The truth is that if you were to get a tattoo from one of the YellowMan commissioned tattoo artists, with the kind of ink coverage you find on YellowMan garments, you would surely be paying well over $218. You might even be adding a few zeros to that number, not to mention the countless hours of pain over multiple sessions. And that’s if the tattoo artist would be willing to tattoo you at all!

YellowMan is not your average garment. You won’t find it at the GAP or at Walmart. Heck, you won’t even find YellowMan at places that pretend to be upscale while still offering generic, or cut-above generic products. YellowMan is truly a quality brand, delivering vivid, durable, and dynamic wearable art.

Let’s start with the garments themselves. YellowMan garments are printed on specially engineered MadKool technical fabrics. These fabrics are formulated specifically for YellowMan to receive art in perfect clarity and permanence. These silky, super-lightweight fabrics also have advanced properties that regulate your natural body temperature, so they can be worn in all kinds of environments and activities. They wick moisture away from your body, so they make perfect workout or athletic gear. They keep you cool in warm environments/activities, and warm in cool environments. They can be worn as first or second layer garments, or layered beneath other clothes without building up unwanted bulk. They are perfect for traveling, as they don’t wrinkle or retain moisture, and they can be packed tight and light.

The construction of each garment is a labor of love. Each design panel (for a shirt it would be front, back, R sleeve, L sleeve) is printed from original art, and then cut and assembled by hand into the final garment as the artist intended. The artists design the art to follow the contours of your body, so the construction of the garments is important. Because of all of this effort, each shirt is essentially custom made.

Commissioning art from these tattoo artists has also been a deep process. YellowMan founder Peter Mui has personally traveled the world, knocking on the doors of each tattoo artist to gain their interest. These relationships have been cultivated in over a decade’s time. Many of these artists are extremely difficult to reach, and have only been established through the camaraderie of other tattoo peers. Ultimately these relationships have been established through a true passion and respect for the top artists in the trade.

Out of sincere respect for the diversity and quality of each tattoo artist’s work, YellowMan believes in paying the artists their deserved value. This has not only kept existing relationships intact, but has rapidly expanded the YellowMan artist collective.

As for the YellowMan demographic, the author of the above inkedtalk.com post might want to note that all kinds of people from every spectrum of culture and social status enjoy YellowMan products. As it is, just look at who gets tattooed these days. It’s pretty much everybody. Then there are the people that don’t have a tattoo but still enjoy them. Add the two groups together and you’ve got a HUGE demographic. They are young and old, men and women, blue-collar, white-collar and no collar, athletic types and couch potatoes, extreme sports enthusiasts and casual cats. The list goes on… and on… and on….

So there you have it! If you have taken the time to read this whole post, you should have no more doubts about YellowMan’s value. It’s the real deal baby!

I agree that the material, quality and design are spectacular. However, you say that it is not available at the GAP. With the GAP’s purchase of Athleta, Yellowman is now part of the GAP family. Yep. Part of mass merchandising.

I wear YMX shirts all winter – as a Ski School Supervisor/Instructor at Holiday Valley. I can’t tell you how many times I get stopped by the fashion police – and they want to know where I got my shirt. The shirt(s) look great, and do a wonderful job regulating my body temperature. Most of the time, I can add a vest, coat and be comfortable. If it gets real cold, I’ll add a wool layer. (and I wear the tanks when teaching canoeing in the summer) I ❤ yellowman shirts.
